Through the Window

Have you ever tried sitting alone in an empty house with the lights completely off, and one window--almost like an extravagant painting--entices your attention as the 4 o'clock sunshine comes pouring in? Because of the darkness that surrounds you, your eyes are naturally drawn to the scintillated light, its beauty intoxicating each and every one of your senses. Have you ever tried letting your thoughts drift aimlessly, not bother attempting to understand the humid weather outside, simply remaining motionless in the cool air inside, and from time to time, reaching for that cup for icy cold smoothness to slide down your throat? Then, when you have set into your quiet, comfort zone, you begin to wonder why that window's portrait is so alluring. Is it the peaceful simplicity in branches of leaves draping over half of the view? Is it the shiny silver glinting off the fence that makes the scene magical? Maybe it is the Victorian-styled home across the street that confirms a sense of renowned confidence in the environment. Let it be what it possibly can be, but you would find yourself unable to tear your eyes off the window, the light, the every detail your mind can interpret--even the half upward-tilted blinds that make you see the world in sections. You would soon begin to wonder where you are, where you can be, where you really want to be.

You would wonder what you already have.

Are you deplorable, because knowing how spectacular the outside world is, you are merely limited to a window's worth of span, unable to break out or breathe in the free air?

Or are you fortunate, for all the wandering souls who experience the freedom every day, do not live a day to pause and reflect on what they are seeing, yet you--because you have been subjected to complete darkness--see how exceptionally beautiful the world is?

But wait. Pause.

Afternoon sunshine still beckons for attention, advertising its life and worth of every passing second. Look. The window twinkles invitingly, like a gateway to an island only belonging to a fairytale. There need not be restlessness. You can still gather that cup of sweet coldness, sit back, and enjoy the thought-provocative scene for what it is.

After all, when night falls, there is no difference between this place...and that.
